November 1, 2011

Dear NBAM Supporter,
This is an exciting time for the New Bedford Art Museum / NBAM, a time of reflection, a time of change. Our creative energy is brewing; the process has begun.

"Everything you can imagine is real." ~ Pablo Picasso

"They always say time changes things, but you actually have to change them yourself" ~ Andy Warhol

"I feel the need of attaining the maximum of intensity with the minimum of means. It is this which has led me to give my painting a character of even greater bareness." ~ Joan Miro

"Creativity takes courage." ~ Henri Matisse

These words by famous artists touch the building process upon which NBAM has embarked: it's about vision, hard work and the drive to keep moving forward. I am happy to report that the future of NBAM is on course for exciting change! After much planning, I am pleased to advise you of the following developments to come during the nextseveral months.

  • We continue to make updates to the building, including bringing the HVAC system up to meet the standards ofthe American Association of Museums. This change will allow us to secure on-loan exhibits from other museumsand institutions, bringing to the Southcoast works by nationally and internationally known artists.
  • In collaborative partnership with The New Bedford Free Public Library, we will launch the "City Series", an ongoing permanent rotation, showcasing treasures from the Library's collection including the work of John James Audubon, Albert Bierstadt and William Bradford.
  • We have engaged Seth Rainville as NBAM Curator who brings his experience as artist and curator.
  • This summer we will initiate a new exhibit series, "Southcoast Collects", which will offer to you the opportunity toview some of the finest private collections from the Southcoast and beyond!
  • NBAM will produce expanded programming to include lectures, classes, concerts, dance, films and panel discussions with experts in a variety of art forms.

These are just some examples of what we have planned. NBAM is your museum. Our goal is to bring to you an experience that you can find nowhere else on the Southcoast. With all of these improvements, you won't have to travel to Boston and New York in order to find inspiration, to be challenged or simply to enjoy all of the benefits thatart can bring.

NBAM is moving forward, but we need your help. We cannot do this without your financial support. If ever there was a time to give to our annual appeal, it's now, a valuable investment for our cultural present and future. If you can imagine it -please help us to make it real.

I send to you my kind regards and most sincere thanks for your generous support,

Kate Ross, Executive Director
