Curator's Statement
Many of the museum visitors on seeing the Audubon Bird Prints have asked the question "Was John James-Audubon influenced by Oriental art?
The exhibition investigates the possible connection of Audubon's prints with Asian art. The Romans were importing silk through the Silk Trail. From the time of Marco Polo on Europeans were impressed with life like Asian renderings of birds and beautiful flowers. Chinese export art was regularly traded to Europe started in the 18th Century. Was John James Audubon influenced by Chinese art? Could Audubon have influenced Japanese art? The exhibition will explore these possibilities.
