Deconstructing Liberty (It’s Not Easy Being Green)
A resident of the Gulf Coast of Mississippi, Bill Myers received his bachelors of fine art in 1974 from Delta State University. He has taught, worked in residence and consulted for over 20 years in fine art. His work has been widely exhibited from Mississippi to New York to California and is held in numerous public and private collections.
Artist's statement:
"My early interest in this piece was the idea of liberty and individualism. I wanted to address the "sameness" that Mega-brands put on the individual. I became more and more interested in the idea of liberty in the face of a government more concerned with the interest of powerful lobbyists such as the military-industrial complex and less concerned with the will of the people (i.e. not to go to war in Iraq).
"The look of the piece came out of living in and around the piles of debris left in the wake of Hurricane Katrina. The breaking levees that are a part of Lady Liberty's robes are more of the question of what is government's role and obligation to its people.
"So, Deconstructing Liberty presents questions of who are we in the face of consumerism, government by special interest and in crisis? The answers are for the viewer to supply."
