artMOBILE
artMOBILE is a cornerstone of the Museum's programs and mission. The program began the summer before the Museum opened its doors to the public and will be entering its sixth season.
artMOBILE is an educational outreach program which provides creative arts experiences directly to children (ages 6 and older) in underserved communities at no cost to participants. The Museum uses the signature "Purple Bus" to transport art supplies to sites across the City of New Bedford where experienced educators facilitate dynamic art projects for the city's at-risk and underserved youth.
artMOBILE provides a safe environment for after-school (summer) activity. It offers youth opportunities to develop self-esteem, express themselves in a positive and confident manner and expand their understanding and appreciation of visual art. artMOBILE is a safe, non-threatening creative environment for youth activity.
By providing a positive outlet for their energy, delinquent behavior is diverted. Youth develop increased verbalization of mood and feelings, as well as an increased knowledge base of art materials and skills. The hands-on nature of the program allows participants to expand their understanding and appreciation for visual arts from a first-hand perspective.
